IX International Congress "Balneotherapy in Health Resort Treatment and Medical Rehabilitation Programmes" An event dedicated to World Water Day - Theme of this year "Water and Gender."
On March 19-20, 2026, Moscow hosted the IX International Congress "Balneotherapy in Health Resort Treatment and Medical Rehabilitation Programmes", dedicated to World Water Day.
This day was first formally proposed in Agenda 21 of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro. This international observance day is celebrated annually on March 22 across the globe. The objective of the event is to raise global awareness of the value of water, ensure safe access to drinking water, and promote the rational management of water resources.
For example, in 2023, humanity lost 600 megatons of water, the largest loss in the past 50 years. And 2.2 billion people worldwide lack access to quality drinking water. Each year is dedicated to specific themes, such as: 2025 - Glacier Preservation, 2022 - Groundwater, 2020 - Water and Climate Change, 2014 - Water and Energy, etc.
This year's theme is "Water and Gender." This is a very large and serious issue, as water supply and collection in water-scarce countries are primarily the responsibility of women and girls aged 9-12, who consequently miss school.
The present Congress was organized by the National Medical Research Center for Rehabilitation and Balneology of the Russian Ministry of Health. It was attended by 650 specialists from 50 Russian cities and 10 foreign countries.
The history of these congresses began a decade ago, when Professor Umberto Solimene, who had collaborated with the Centre for over 30 years and was then President of FEMTEC, proposed holding a scientific conference to coincide with International Water Day. Over the past decade, this conference has evolved into a major event, covering all aspects of scientific and practical work related to the extraction and use of mineral waters for therapeutic purposes. This year, the Congress comprised ten sections, each addressing a distinct subject.
The most significant of these are: “Research and Practical Application of Mineral Waters: Traditions and Innovations”, “Water Resources as a Key Driver of Territorial and Economic Development in Regions”, “Balneology: Synthesis of Science and Practice”, “Health Resort Treatment - a Strategic Resource for Preventive Medicine”.
The total number of papers presented at the conference exceeded 60. The international section was dedicated to the "ideologist and founder" of this event, Professor Umberto Solimene. Welcoming remarks and papers were given by Professor Fausto Bonsignori (Italy), FEMTEC Vice-Presidents Florana Menendez (Cuba) and Sholpan Bulekbayeva (Kazakhstan), Zohid Abdurakhimov (Uzbekistan), Professors Antonella Fioravanti (Italy), Pedro Cantista (Portugal), and Giorgio D'Alessandro (Switzerland). Dr. Natalia Chaurskaya/ Solimene (Russia/ Italy) delivered a presentation "International Cooperation in Balneology".
