International Focus on Wellness: Uzbekistan Hosts Scientific Conference on Sanatorium Treatment and Medical Tourism

Tashkent Summit Marks 120th Anniversary of Trade Union Federation with Global Balneology Experts

The International Scientific and Practical Conference, «Modern prospects of sanatorium-resort treatment and medical tourism», took place in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, from November 27 to 30 of this year. The event was dedicated to the 120th anniversary of the organization of the Federation of Trade Unions of Uzbekistan.

The conference attracted a distinguished assembly of over 40 experts from 14 countries, including Russia, Turkey, Italy, the Czech Republic, Switzerland, Georgia, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Ukraine, Poland, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Hungary, Israel, and Kazakhstan. Twelve reports were presented by scientists and employees of resort institutions from Uzbekistan.

Overview of Uzbekistan's Resort System

The opening ceremony featured welcoming speeches from Mr. Kudratilla Rafikov, Chairman of the Federation of Trade Unions, and Mr. Asilbek Khudayarov, Minister of Health of Uzbekistan.

The plenary session commenced with a keynote speech by Mr. Anvar Akhmedov, General Director of the Main Sanatorium and Resort Administration of the Federation of Trade Unions of Uzbekistan. His report provided a comprehensive overview of the resort trade union system, highlighting the current state of the industry.

The Federation of Trade Unions of Uzbekistan operates a system comprising 33 health resorts with a total capacity of 8,000 beds. These sanatoriums are strategically located across all regions of the republic, expanding the network of medical and diagnostic offices and creating permanent employment for over 4,000 doctors and medical personnel, with an additional 1,500 jobs created through office expansion. In recent years, over 800,000 people have received treatment and rehabilitation at these facilities.

Social Commitment and Therapeutic Resources

A key feature emphasized was the system's social focus: more than 20,000 trips have been allocated free of charge, and a significant number of patients pay only 50% of the cost of their stay.

The primary therapeutic resource utilized is Mineral Waters, extracted from wells at depths ranging from 500 to 3,000 meters. The water temperature in 34 wells varies from +14°C to +70°C, with 24 wells maintaining a temperature of +37°C. These mineral waters include internationally classified types such as radon, iodine and bromine, hydrogen sulfide, hydrocarbonate, and siliceous.

In addition to traditional mineral water treatments, all sanatoriums apply a wide array of modern physiotherapeutic techniques for treatment and rehabilitation. These include computerized spine stretching, lymphatic drainage, ozone therapy, and colon hydrotherapy. The infrastructure of these modern sanatoriums and health centers boasts open and closed swimming pools, underwater massage, saunas, various types of showers (Vichy, Sharko, etc.), laser and magnetic therapy, and carbon dioxide, sapropelic, and other types of mud baths and applications.

International Cooperation and Scientific Program

Two years ago, the Federation of Trade Unions of Uzbekistan achieved membership in FEMTEC (World Federation of Hydrotherapy and Climatotherapy), thanks to the efforts of Dr. Zohid Abdurakhimov, Depute Head of the Sanatorium and Resort Office. This membership has facilitated active participation in various international conferences and forums in countries such as the Czech Republic, Belarus, Azerbaijan, Russia, Italy, Georgia, Spain, and China, allowing the federation to demonstrate the achievements of the national school of balneology and engage in the exchange of information and practical knowledge.

The scientific program of the conference featured 34 presentations across a plenary session and two dedicated sections: «Rehabilitation and sanatorium and spa medicine in Central Asia» and «Innovations and interdisciplinary approaches in rehabilitation».

Speakers included representatives from FEMTEC member countries, such as Prof. Mufit Zeki Karagulle (Turkey), who presented on «Mineral waters and therapeutic muds are multifunctional therapeutic agents». Prof. Fausto Bonsignori (Italy) dedicated his report to the «Current state of thermal medicine: tradition and innovation». Furthermore, Mrs. Natalia Chaurskaya/Solimene, Head of the International Relations Department of FEMTEC, presented a report titled «The role of FEMTEC in the development of international cooperation in the field of balneology and rehabilitation».

The depth and significance of the topics and arguments raised by all conference participants were exceptionally diverse and informative. To ensure all valuable content is shared, it has been proposed to publish the entire event program, including all scientific report titles and authors.

A significant outcome of the Conference was the signing of Memorandums of Cooperation between the Main Sanatorium and Resort Administration and the Balneology Associations of Italy, Hungary, and Turkey.
