 First International Congress on Balneotherapy Management, Auga Campus Ourense, Spain The University of Vigo, through its Auga Campus (Campus of Water) in Ourense hosted “First International Congress on Balneotherapy Management”, a landmark event bringing together leading experts in medical hydrology, public health policy, spa management, and thermal tourism
Scheduled for 20-21 November 2025, the two-day congress highlighted the scientific, medical and socio-economic value of balneotherapy, as well as its growing potential for integration into national health systems.
On the first day, the congress opening ceremony was held at the Vigo University’s Ourense Campus with an institutional session featuring regional authorities and spa-industry representatives, focusing on public-private cooperation to strengthen the thermal sector.

For 2025/2026, University of Vigo launched its own study program of specialisation at the Faculty of Sciences at the Ourense campus: "Water, Balneotherapy and Health" ("Agua, Termalismo y Salud"). This program covers modules such as hydrogeology, microbiological and chemical quality of thermal water, legislation, but also therapeutic applications (for rheumatic, dermatological, respiratory pathologies, etc.) and cosmetics.
The major thematic areas structured the scientific program:
- Medical Evidence and Therapeutic Advances;
- Management and Public Health Integration;
- Thermal Tourism and Regional Development;

On the second day, the congress moved to the Balneario de Laias, where European spa-therapy models and opportunities for integrating balneotherapy into public healthcare frameworks were discussed. The congress concluded with a keynote presentation by Olga Surdu, President of the World Federation of Hydrotherapy and Climatotherapy (FEMTEC), who offered an interdisciplinary perspective on the scientific challenges and societal benefits of balneotherapy.
By combining clinical research, health-policy analysis, and tourism development strategies, the “First International Congress on Balneotherapy Management” positioned Ourense and the University of Vigo as international hubs for thermal research and innovation. |
